Course overview
This course provides an exciting new opportunity to study both Business and Accounting within the one course to achieve two SQA qualifications between August and June, a National Certificate (NC) in Business and a National Progression Award (NPA) in Accounting.
The content and principal aims of this course are to:
- give you an introduction to the basics of accounting and a background in business
- enable you to determine if you have an aptitude and interest in accounting and business, and to consider the various options open to you allowing you to make informed career choices in the future
- prepare you for entry into higher level qualifications, particularly HNC/HND before progressing to 3rd year entry to a related Degree
- provide you with specific accounting and business related knowledge and practical skills demanded by employers
- provide a nationally recognised qualification with transferable credits
- to respond to market demand for relevant skills development and qualifications at non-advanced level in business and accounting

How will I be assessed?
Ongoing course assessments through a range of practical activities, observations, projects, presentations, using secure SQA assessment support packs. The development of meta skills will be embedded within our learning and teaching, giving you opportunities to enhance and develop these skills while you study.

Other information:
You may be eligible to apply for a bursary to help support you financially throughout your course.
Full time course: 17 hours per week
Entry requirements
Any of the following:
- 3 National 4s to include English, Maths or Application of Maths, and Business or Accounting
- Relevant group of SQA National qualifications at SCQF Level 4
- Equivalent recognised qualification
- Relevant work experience with current reference
If English is not your first language, ESOL at an appropriate level or IELTS or equivalent with an entry score of 5.5 or above is recommended.
You will also need
- good level of digital literacy
- a genuine interest in business and accounting
Learning outcome
You will study key business areas in:
- book-keeping
- business communication
- economics
- financial, computerised and management accounting
- financial services
- marketing
- Microsoft Office applications for business purposes
Continuous attendance and successful completion of all assessments will result in the achievement of an NC in Business at Level 5 and an NPA in Accounting at Level 6.
Progression
Where can this course lead?
- This course will provide you with sufficient training in business and accounting procedures and techniques to enable you to gain employment at a clerical level in various industry sectors. The entry level job opportunities are wide and varied within many sectors.
- Successful achievement of the course will also give you direct access to a range of HNC or HND courses, on achievement of which will give you the opportunity to progress directly to the third year of a related Bachelor of Arts Degree.
