Course description

Social Science courses continue to be a popular gateway to HN or Degree study as well as providing students with confidence and a clear pathway to a fulfilling career. This course is targeted at potential students who have recently left school or taken a change of direction at Further Education level. Successfully passing this course will allow you to progress to HN then Degree level study, either at UHI or through UCAS to other institutions. This course will populate your academic record with a robust qualification, indeed, if you pass all the units you will be awarded an NC Level 6.

You will complete 18 credits based on the SQA Social Science units at Level 5 and 6. These units will provide you with a solid academic foundation, as well as many transferrable skills that you can take into a raft of different career options. We have designed this course to immerse you in many of the subject disciplines in the wider Humanities area so you are better informed of what degree to embark upon. You will study units on: politics; philosophy; history; psychology; economics; literature amongst others. Furthermore, your core skills will be refreshed with communications, IT, personal development planning and numeracy to ensure your transition to HN or Degree is one you are well prepared for.

Entry requirements

  • Four National 5s at Grade C or above in a literary relevant subject (For example, History, Modern Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Geography, Politics, RMPS, Maths)
  • A solid personal statement provided in support of your application
  • OR

  • Pass at Social Science Level 5
  • A solid personal statement provided in support of your application
  • If you fall short of these qualifications, please do apply anyway. We will interview you and may recommended our Social Sciences NQ Level 5 course.

Progression

NQ/NC Social Science is primarily a gateway to HN then degree level qualifications for those leaving school with fewer qualifications than they aspired to. We would be delighted to see you remain at UHI Perth to do your HNC then one of our Social Science Degrees: BA Social Science; BA Politics; BA Criminology or a host of Joint Degrees that use innovative learning technology to deliver first class education all over the region. However, this course gives you many skills suitable for the modern workforce including: report writing; critical thinking; writing skills; organisation; teanworking and debating.
