This sponsored MNTB Deck Cadet training scheme is for those who would like to serve as a Deck Officer on seagoing ships of the Merchant Navy.
Course description
Deck Officers are vital members of a ship’s operational crew, responsible for navigating vessels safely around the world.
This programme consists of five phases undertaken over three years, and combines classroom learning at the Scottish Maritime Academy (SMA) with time spent on commercial ships operating across seas and oceans worldwide.
Successful students will gain the MCA Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competency and a CertHe (SCQF Level 7) Nautical Science.

What you will experience

You will complete the following courses during the programme:
- STCW Basic Safety courses
- National Certificate (NC) in Shipping and Maritime Operations
- Theoretical and practical elements of Efficient Deckhand
- Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (PRCRB)
- MNTB Entry into Enclosed spaces
- CertHe (SCQF Level 7) Nautical Science
- Ancillary courses required for Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competency
- Sea phases will be undertaken and training provided as per MNTB training record book.

Entry requirements
- Applicants should have four National 5 passes (or equivalent) including English, Maths and one science subject (Applications of Maths is not accepted)
- You will also be required to pass a seafarer medical test.
Please note that a criminal record may prevent applicants from being accepted onto this course due to international visa restrictions.
Learning outcome
Upon successful completion of the programme you will be awarded:
- MCA Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competency (STCW)
- Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Nautical Science.
Progression
Upon successful completion of the programme, along with the required sea time, you can progress to HND Nautical Science leading to the Chief Mate Certificate of Competency, followed by the full Master’s certification.
