This course will prepare you for a career as a practitioner with the values and principles that underpin working life in early education and childcare.

Course description

This course will prepare you for employment by giving you the essentials skills, knowledge and understanding of current workplace practice, legislations, policies and frameworks required to work within in a childhood practice setting.

Upon completion, candidates are eligible to register with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) at practitioner level. This course provides a great opportunity to gain a nationally and professionally recognised group award.

What you will experience

In-depth understanding of:

  • Protection and participation
  • Contemporary issues for children and families
  • Promoting language, literacy and numeracy in early education and childcare
  • Working with those who have additional support needs
  • How to understand/ support child behaviour
  • Rights and provision

A mandatory placement opportunity will be provided to students who demonstrate appropriate skills and values required in a real working environment. During work placement, students are required to work alongside the placement team and gather evidence for the SVQ units, and other workplace related units.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

This course is a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) programme. This means that you are required to have access to your own laptop computer, netbook or similar device in class each day that you are in college.

Entry requirements

  • Two Highers preferably including English (or equivalent)

Or

  • Completion of a relevant SCQF Level 6 course

Or

  • Completion of a Foundation Apprenticeship in Social Services (Children & Young People)
  • Evidence of 60 hours volunteering or placement is preferable – ideally within an early years or childcare environment
  • A clear PVG disclosure will be required prior to placement allocation. Please note your PVG membership will be organised by the College.
