Course description

If you have a flair for combining creative ideas with graphics, illustration, digital imaging, or art and design, then Visual Communication is the course for you. Whether you’re a creative spark who sees the bigger picture, or a curious problem solver with an eye on the finished article, join us!      

You will work on a range of projects designed to develop your individual and team working skills while working to client briefs. Potential projects include working with commercial clients, schools, community partnerships, and for other departments in the college. Key areas of study include: Creative Projects, Typography, Graphic Design, Mixed Media, Creative Process and Digital Imaging.

Entry requirements

A portfolio showing creative outputs e.g. Graphic Design, Photography and/ or Art & Designplus one of the following:

One Higher at Grade C or above with English National 5 at Grade C minimum

National Certificate: Photography SCQF Level 6

National Certificate: Art and Design SCQF Level 6

Mature students will be considered on an individual basis based on a portfolio of art and design work in their field of study and experience

Learning outcome

  • If you have an eye for shape, form, colour, typography, texture along with an interest in communicating visually then this is your ideal course! Graphic Designers and Visual Communicators create content for a wide variety of platforms and purposes including; social media content, website content, info-graphics, merchandising, advertising and printed or digital product promotion and advertising. 
  • Using industry-standard Adobe products on high-spec MAC Studio computers will help you become very confident in the following key work-ready skills: Working with Creative Briefs and real clients; Planning, Resourcing, Presenting, Pitching, Evaluation, Working independently and collaboratively to tight timescales.

This HNC Year is the 1st Year of the HND. The HNC is equivalent to 1st Year of a University Degree
You can progress to the next level, HND (Year 2) if you successfully complete the HNC
