Course description

The course is aimed to develop competence in:-

  • Ability to safely perform and monitor loading, discharging and care of oil cargo.
  • Familiarise with physical and chemical properties of oil cargoes.
  • Take precautions to prevent hazards.
  • Apply occupational health and safety precautions.
  • Respond to emergencies.
  • Take precautions to prevent pollution of the environment.
  • Monitor and control compliance with legislative requirements.

Course content includes:-

  • Background of oil transportation.
  • Oil tanker design and equipment.
  • Hydrocarbon Hazards associated with oil cargoes.
  • Enclosed space entry.
  • Crude Oil Washing.
  • Oil tanker piping systems.
  • Tank and cargo system washing and preparation.
  • Cargo pumps.
  • Emergency procedures.
  • Tanker operation cycle.
  • Inert Gas systems.
  • Case studies and lessons learned.

There are four main outcomes to this training:

  • Outcome 1: The learner understands the chemical and physical properties of cargoes and the hazards and control measures associated with carrying oil on board tankers.
  • Outcome 2: The learner knows what is involved in the safe operation and monitoring of cargo on board an oil tanker.
  • Outcome 3: The learner can apply health, safety, and environmental precautions in working on an oil tanker.
  • Outcome 4: The learner can perform and monitor safe oil tanker cargo operations in compliance with legislative requirements.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry requirements

Candidates aspiring to obtain MCA approved certificate should comply with the requirements as per MSN 1866(M):-

  • Basic training certificate in oil and chemical tanker cargo operations recognized by MCA.
  • Tanker Fire Fighting certificate approved by MCA.

Note: Candidates eager to learn but not meeting the prerequisites will be issued with a Certificate of attendance on successful completion of the course. The college will also assist in the completion of basic tanker training and entry requirements.
