Suited to those with some prior science knowledge, you’ll gain a sound theoretical understanding.

Course description

As well as providing a sound theoretical understanding of science to allow future study at HNC/D or university, this course will also involve a great deal of practical work which will be of direct relevance to local interests, industries or topical issues.

This will ensure you acquire a broad base of laboratory knowledge and expertise, of great value in the job market. Examples of practical activities may include: testing of aerodynamic design and efficiency by use of a wind tunnel, synthesis and testing of biodiesels, and the study of how enzymes work in our bodies.

Entry requirements

  • National 5 passes at grade B or above in two science subjects and Maths (Applications of Maths may be accepted if there is evidence of strong qualifications in science)
  • If you only hold one National 5 in a science subject, this may still allow entry if you have evidence of strong qualifications in other subjects

There are no formal agreements in place for university progression directly from this course, so you may need to undertake further study at HNC/D level.

However, many students have progressed from SCQF Level 6 in the past. You are advised to contact your chosen university directly with regards to this.

Employment: opportunities following this level of study may include roles as a temporary technician, with the possibility to move on to become an apprentice technician.
