It’s the beginning of the school year and Skills Development Scotland (SDS) is here to support you and your pupils throughout the months ahead.

Our professionally qualified careers advisers offer career information, advice and guidance (CIAG) in every state secondary school in Scotland.

There are also key tools and information on My World of Work, no matter what stage your pupils are at.

Teacher resources

We have a range of resources to help you use My World of Work in the classroom.

There are activities, articles and subject lesson inserts which help your pupils relate what they’re learning in the classroom to the world of work. They:

  • Meet a range of Experiences and Outcomes which are clearly set out in Building the Curriculum 4
  • Support delivery of the ‘I can’ statements defined by the Career Education Standard
  • Introduce Career Management Skills
  • Help when preparing reports for How Good is Our School reviews

School offer

We’ve outlined some of the key information below. You can also have a look at our school services table which provides an overview of the help on offer at each stage.

Starting secondary school

  • Your pupils will have a group session with their school careers adviser to touch on some of the big decisions they’ll face in the years ahead. Look out for our S1 magazine which introduces careers help in school
  • The About Me tool on My World of Work will give your pupils the chance to see which jobs are suited to their interests

Making subject choices in S2/S3

  • Your pupils will have a group session with their careers adviser around making informed subject choices
  • They will have the chance to have one-to-one session with their careers adviser in the year that they’re making their significant subject choice
  • Look out for the subject choices magazine which includes an action plan to help make decisions
  • The strengths tool on My World of Work gives your pupils the chance to discover what they’re good at and how this relates to different jobs. You can try the strengths activity in class
  • There is a subject choices tool on My World of Work. Your pupils can type in up to six subjects. The tool finds what career these subjects would be useful

Leaving school

  • There will be a series of interactive group activities with their careers adviser to help think about their future career and options
  • Careers advisers are available for drop-in appointments throughout the year. If your pupil is regularly seeing a careers adviser they will make sure SDS support continues as long as it’s needed after school
  • There are a variety of careers events including HE Exhibitions, Skills Scotland and the Scottish Apprenticeship Show
  • The Learn and Train and Getting a Job sections of My World of Work have both course and job searches. There are also lots of advice articles depending on the route your pupils choose to take and a CV builder tool too. Have a look at the teacher resources for activities to do in class
