Research and development manager

'You're making something that's never been made before.'

As the manager of a team of synthetic chemists, Lorna has a range of responsibilities.

She spends part of her time in the laboratory, creating chemical new compounds, and the rest of her time meeting and talking with clients to make sure her team is providing a good service to its customers.

She works for EPP Ltd, a Scottish company that offers analytical and development services in chemical and environmental science.

Lorna started her career as an organic chemist, then did postdoctoral research at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh before joining EPP as an analyst.

Its a job where you need to be prepared for anything, including explosions and fires.

'It can be dangerous' says Lorna. 'You need to think about the possibility of things going wrong.'
