COVID-19 (Coronavirus)
Skills Development Scotland (SDS) is still here to support you and your pupils. You can use the information and resources on My World of Work. Spark career conversations with your primary class using our fun tools and classroom activities.
Your pupils can explore what they’re good at, where their interests lie and start building their skills for the world of work.
Why use it?
The tools and resources:
- Support Experiences and Outcomes in the Curriculum for Excellence, including health and wellbeing across learning and literacy across learning
- Support the delivery of the Career Education Standard
- Introduce Career Management Skills
How does it work?
There are three tools created specifically for primary 5-7 pupils:
Animal me
A fun quiz that lets pupils explore their personality. At the end, they’re assigned an animal, and given some ideas about the types of career that might suit them.
My interests
Lets pupils find out how their interests and likes can help them when they’re making decisions. Their results will give them some ideas about jobs they might be interested in for the future.
Profile
After completing the other tools, pupils can write statements about their personality, interests and skills in their profile. This can be downloaded and shared with others.
To access the tools, register as a primary teacher on My World of Work. You’ll then need to register the pupils in your class before they can get started. You’ll be able to do this in your account.
Pupils should go to myworldofwork.co.uk/ican. Their default passcode will be 1234 which should be updated the first time they log in.
If pupils are using the same computer as you to access the tools, remember to log out of your own My World of Work account before they try to log in.
Classroom activities
To bring the experience to life, we’ve developed activities that you can do in class.
They’ve been designed to support the use of the digital tools, and to allow you to explore even more aspects of work with your pupils.
There’s a natural progression through the activities, as laid out on the primary teacher section on the partner resources page.
The activity outline provides guidance on the stage or year group that the activity is geared towards.
Beyond primary school
My World of Work has a range of tools to help your pupils as they progress onto secondary school.
Pupils can build on what they’ve learned in their primary accounts, and there are secondary teacher resources to support and further explore career options in the classroom.
There are also professionally qualified Skills Development Scotland (SDS) careers advisers in every state secondary school in Scotland.
They offer career information, advice and guidance (CIAG) from S1.
