What's it like?

You would fit and repair gas and electricity meters in homes and businesses.

Smart meters help customers to keep track of how much energy they use in real time and which appliances use the most power. The aim is to help customers reduce their energy use and so cut bills.

On a typical job, you would:

  • Visit the customer at the arranged time
  • Remove the existing meter
  • Fit the new smart meter
  • Do tests to make sure the meter is working
  • Explain how to use the meter
  • Answer any further questions
  • Give energy efficiency advice to customers

You could work for one of the big energy companies or for a smaller firm. You would not have to sell energy plans or tariffs.

It would be important to understand safe working practices.

Working conditions

Hours

You'd work 35 to 40 hours a week, Monday to Friday. You may also be part of a standby rota for jobs outside of normal working hours, which could include weekends.

Environment

You'd install meters inside domestic and commercial premises or in buildings nearby. Some sites may be outside, and you'd be expected to work in all weathers.

Travel

Your employer would normally provide you with a van to travel from job to job. As you'd mostly be working alone, a full UK driving licence is usually needed.

There are no formal qualifications required to enter this role but most employers value a good general education

You could do a Modern Apprenticeship in Smart Meter Installation.

Some employers may ask for qualifications at SCQF level 4/5.
