Lighting technician and technical theatre apprentice

"You need to be able  to think on your feet... and keep a calm head because things can go wrong!"

It was work experience that began Kat’s career in theatre.

While still at school, she was picked to be a technical runner at mFest, an arts and music festival organised and run by teenagers in Stirling with support from the Macrobert Arts Centre.

Kat says,‘I had a great time working with fabulous people and seeing all these amazing things that I just wanted a bit more.’

‘At that time I was still a bit young and still in school. I then found out about the modern apprenticeship and it was perfect timing for me.’

Now she's completed a level three Modern Apprenticeship in Technical Theatre covering rigging, lighting and sound, at the Macrobert with Young Scot and Creative Scotland and she’s thriving in her role.

‘All the way through high school there was more pressure on going to university. I kept looking at courses but felt that none of them fitted what I wanted. Two weeks after I finished high school I fell into this job and it was the best thing that happened to me.’
