Students will be given the opportunity to study and gain practical experience in a range of land-based industries including agriculture, horticulture, conservation, animal care and more.  The course at SRUC Barony Campus includes tree/plant identification, fencing, tractor work, rural and woodland skills and gardening and grass cutting.

The NC Rural Skills course is a combination of practical skills and theory.

On successful completion students can progress to specialist SCQF Level 5 National Certificate courses in  or to SVQs at the same level.

The first year provides an introduction to the principles of cell biology, biochemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics, biotechnology,   plant physiology, soils, land use, crop and livestock production, ecology, ecosystems and environmental issues. The Modern Apprenticeship comprises of elements which must be achieved: SVQ Trees and Timber, work based core skills in ICT, First Aid certification and one other industry specific training course.

The SVQ is made up of mandatory units e.g. Tree identification, health and safety and working to establish and maintain working relationships. With a range of optional units e.g. Plant trees, control unwanted vegetation, maintain and repair paths and surfaces and felling trees using a chainsaw.
