Course description

It is widely recognised that statistics play an essential part in planning, control and communication within an organisation. This Unit is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills for further study or employment in an administrative or IT environment, and will introduce you to statistical concepts and descriptive statistics commonly used in business. It is an optional Unit within HNC/HND Administration and Information Technology courses, but is also included within other HN Group Awards or can be taken as a stand-alone unit. For further information on this course, please visit the SQA website. Credit points and level: 1 HN credit at SCQF level 8: (8 SCQF credit points at SCQF level 8) This Unit will provide you with an underpinning knowledge and the skills required to use basic statistical and graphical techniques to assist with these management functions and your ability to address business problems. Outcome 1 will enable you to develop an understanding of statistical terms, source relevant published statistical data and demonstrate statistical techniques associated with collecting your own data for business purposes. Outcome 2 builds on these skills by allowing you to analyse, present and interpret data to assist with improving business effectiveness and efficiency. Outcome 3 will enable you to develop and demonstrate an understanding of relationships that may exist between data to assist you with business planning and control activities. The skills required in this Unit underpin the vocational relevance of your course and use a mixture of assessment instruments. These will build on your skills for researching, evaluating and interpreting data and communicating information. This unit is assessed through three separate assessments. In order to complete the unit successfully, you will be required to achieve a satisfactory level of performance in all assessed work. Entry requirements

It would be beneficial if candidates have basic skills in numeracy and in the use of appropriate IT software. This could be demonstrated by possessing one of the following (or equivalent):  Core Skill Numeracy at SCQF level 5 Core Skill Information and Communication Technology at SCQF level 5 NQ Unit DM3R 11: Information Technology for Administrators HN Unit F84V 34 IT in Business: Spreadsheets This course requires you to manage your workload independently. You will be allocated a tutor once enrolled on course who will contact you regularly via email or phone on your progress of learning. You will have access to all the student support services on the college website with regards to accessing learning materials and books.
