The course is organised into three Units. The following are projected timings for the delivery of each Unit. UNIT ONE ‘Chemical Changes and Structure’ The introductory Unit of the course comprises the following sub-topics; • Substances • Bonding, Structure and Properties • Formulae, the Mole and Equations • The Structure of the Atom • Reaction Rates • Acids and Bases UNIT TWO ‘Nature’s Chemistry’ Unit 2 will follow Unit 1. It is a full unit which contains the following sub-topics; • Nomenclature and Structural Formulae of Hydrocarbons • Alcohols, • Carboxylic Acids and Esters • Energy from Fuels UNIT THREE ‘Chemistry in Unit 3 will follow Unit 2. It is also a full unit and contains the following sub-topics; • Properties of Plastics • Metals • Nuclear Chemistry • Fertilisers • Chemical Analysis The course design will enable candidates to gain experience of practical techniques in Chemistry and to apply these techniques by carrying out a practical investigation into a suitable area of the subject. Each candidate will submit a report which describes the background to the investigation and details the results achieved and conclusions drawn from the investigation.
