Course description

The CCNA Routing and Switching curriculum is a gateway to entry-level networking jobs and IT careers. The curriculum consists of three, 70-hour semesters: • Introduction to Networks • Switching Routing & Wireless Essentials • Enterprise Networking, Security, & Automation. All 3 semesters are recommended before taking the Cisco CCNA 200-301 certification exam. The entire curriculum is online and can be accessed from the internet via PC, phone or tablet. The course is a mixture of online and on-campus learning: 1 evening per week - Tuesdays 6pm - 9pm. During the course you will develop a working knowledge of routing, switching, network applications, protocols, and services. You will study with an instructor in the classroom and access expert content online anytime. You can practice what you learn on both real equipment and Cisco Packet Tracer, a network configuration simulation tool. Practical exercises are spread throughout the course. You will undertake course assessments and you get immediate feedback on your work through built-in quizzes and tests. Course content Semester 1 – Introduction to Networks This semester is stage one in the series of networking courses. It will introduce the architecture, structure, functions, components, and models of the internet and computer networks, giving you a general grounding in network knowledge. The principles of IP addressing and the fundamentals of Ethernet concepts, media, and operations are also introduced to you, in order provide a foundation for the curriculum. By the end of the semester, you will be able to build simple local area networks (LAN) that integrate IP addressing schemes, foundational network security, and perform basic configurations for routers and switches. Semester 2 – Switching, Routing and Wireless Essentials The second semester in the CCNA curriculum focuses on switching technologies and router operations that support small-to-medium business networks and includes wireless local area networks (WLAN) and security concepts. By the end of this semester, you will be able to perform basic network configuration and troubleshooting, identify and mitigate LAN security threats, and configure and secure a basic WLAN. Semester 3 – Enterprise Networking, Security and Automation The third semester describes the architectures and considerations related to designing, securing, operating and troubleshooting enterprise networks - including wide area network (WAN) technologies & quality of service (QoS) mechanisms for secure remote access, along with software-defined networking, virtualisation, and automation concepts supporting network digitisation. By the end of this semester, you will gain skills to configure and troubleshoot enterprise networks and learn to identify and protect against cybersecurity threats. You are introduced to network management tools and learn key concepts of software-defined networking, including controller-based architectures and how application programming interfaces (APIs) enable network automation. You will also develop the knowledge to configure and troubleshoot network devices and resolve common issues with data link protocols. Finally, you will be exploring how to implement IPSec and virtual private network (VPN) operations in a complex network. Cost: £400 per semester. To complete all three semesters the fee is £1200. CISCO Certification (exam) costs £200 and covers Semester 1-3. This fee is to be paid to the college prior to sitting the exam. A refund of up to £90 of the exam fee may be claimed back directly from CISCO if a pass of 75% is achieved at the first attempt. On campus lessons are every Tuesday evening (6pm - 9pm) on Cardonald Campus
