How volunteering helped me get a Modern Apprenticeship

We're celebrating Scottish Apprenticeship Week. Today, Michael explains how the experience he got through volunteering helped him get a Modern Apprenticeship.

Michael Clark

The volunteering opportunity

Michael was in sixth year at Our Lady's High school in Motherwell, when he had the chance to become a volunteer.

That opportunity was tied in with this very website: he became a My World of Work ambassador.

'My role was to promote My World of Work to other pupils,' Michael explains. 'Myself and two other pupils worked as a team for a few hours a week, making presentations.

'We did presentations during school time and in our own free time, to many different audiences – year groups, primary children, teachers and parents.

'Each presentation was made to be specific to each audience, highlighting the parts of the site that can be used to help them, or that they can use to help others.'

The skills

As an ambassador, Michael was able to develop his skill set. 'Teamwork, IT skills, communication skills, confidence talking in front of people and confidence in applying the skills I have to task I'm doing were all things I developed,' he says.

The interview

'It gives you a great opportunity to talk about your experiences, and talk about skills you have gained, without the employer having heard it all before.'

After he finished school, Michael applied for a digital marketing Modern Apprenticeship. The experience he got through volunteering gave him plenty to talk about – and he got the job.

'My role as an ambassador stuck out to my interviewer,' he says. 'She said it was 'amazing' that I had it on my CV.

'Not everybody does the same thing, so it gives you a great opportunity to talk about your experiences, and talk about skills you have gained, without the employer having heard it all before.

'When I started volunteering, I had no idea that it would benefit me as much as it did.

'I'm so glad that I have the experience to look back on.'
