There are a number of jobs in Scotland where being able to speak Gaelic could be an advantage or even a necessity. But when it comes to applying for these jobs, how do you show off your Gaelic skills? Do you send in your CV in English, Gaelic, or both?

We spoke to Morna Butcher, Gaelic teacher recruitment officer at Bòrd na Gàidhlig, to find out how best to highlight your Gaelic skills in your CV and cover letter.

Gaelic CV, yes or no?

‘It depends on the organisation. If the organisation is fully Gaelic then it would be a good idea to submit a CV in Gaelic. But if it’s an organisation such as a council or university that has a Gaelic plan but aren’t necessarily Gaelic speakers, it might be a bit prudent to assume that the person in HR can speak Gaelic.

‘It’s therefore important to highlight Gaelic as one of your skills and make sure your references can speak about your Gaelic abilities. The main thing is to be aware of the organisation.’

What about submitting two CVs, one in English and one in Gaelic?

‘If you feel that it’s appropriate it might be useful to send a Gaelic CV and English CV. There’s no harm in having a Gaelic copy.

'It’s very important if you are saying that you are fluent in Gaelic and you submit a CV in Gaelic that there are no grammatical errors or spelling mistakes.’

Where should Gaelic skills be highlighted in a CV?

‘I would recommend highlighting Gaelic skills high up on your CV, but also highlighting that you’re interested in Gaelic culture because that’s also a big part. It might be a good idea to mention this in the introductory paragraph.

'Gaelic is also a skill in itself so highlight it just in the way you would highlight something like computer skills.'

What if the job does not require Gaelic language skills?

‘If you’re not applying for a Gaelic-focussed job but the organisation does have a Gaelic plan then it is worth highlighting your Gaelic skills in your CV as it could open up opportunities in the future.’

Bruce Whyte, public health programme manager, Glasgow Centre for Population Health, uses his Gaelic skills even though they are not related to his job.

‘Although I’m not employed to be a Gaelic spokesperson or anything like that, I do interviews in Gaelic with the media – whether it’s talking about one of our reports or giving a comment on something else which is happening,' he says.

‘It’s not the main part of my job but speaking Gaelic has meant that’s something else I’ve been able to do.’

Key Advice

‘I would say that it’s all about making sure that you look at the key skills when you’re applying for a job. If it’s a Gaelic job then highlight your Gaelic skills,' said Morna.

Am biodh CB Gàidhlig feumail?

Seo beagan fiosrachaidh air na dòighean as fheàrr sgilean Gàidhlig a shanasachd nad CB.

Tha grunn obraichean ann na Alba far a bheil an comas Gàidhlig a bhruidhinn na bhuannachd, no riatanach fiù ’s. Ach nuair a thig e gu bhith cur a-steach airson nan obraichean sin, ciamar a nì thu sanasachd air na sgilean Gàidhlig agad? Am bu chòir dhut an CB a chur a-steach ann am Beurla, Gàidhlig no an dà chuid?

Bhruidhinn sinn ri Morna Nic a’ Bhùidseir, an t-Oifigear Trusaidh Luchd-teagaisg aig Bòrd na Gàidhlig, mu na dòighean as fheàrr sanasachd a dhèanamh air do sgilean Gàidhlig sa Chunntas-beatha agad agus san litir mhìneachaidh agad.

Cunntas-beatha Gàidhlig, am bu chòir dhut fear a dhèanamh?

‘Bidh e an crochadh air cò a’ bhuidheann a th’ ann. Mas e buidheann Ghàidhlig a th’ ann, chanainn gum bu chòir dhut Cunntas-beatha Gàidhlig a chur thuca. Ach mas e buidheann a th’ ann mar chomhairle no oilthigh, aig a bheil Plana Gàidhlig ach nach eil nam buidheann Ghàidhlig, bhiodh e glic ’s dòcha sùileachadh nach eil Gàidhlig aig na daoine a tha ag obair ann an Sgiobachd, no HR.

‘Mar sin, tha e cudromach gun dèan thu follaiseach gu bheil Gàidhlig agad mar sgil agus gun dèan thu cinnteach gun urrainn dha na daoine a roghnaich thu mar luchd-teiste bruidhinn air na comasan Gàidhlig agad. ’S e an rud as cudromaiche, a bhith eòlach air a’ bhuidhinn.’

Dè mu dheidhinn dà CB a chur a-steach, aonan ann am Beurla agus fear eile ann an Gàidhlig?

‘Ma tha thu a’ smaoineachadh gum biodh e freagarrach, dh’fhaodadh gum biodh e feumail Cunntas-beatha a chur thuca ann an Gàidhlig agus Beurla. Cha dèanadh lethbhreac Gàidhlig cron sam bith.

‘Tha e uabhasach cudromach, ma tha thu ag ràdh gu bheil thu fileanta ann an Gàidhlig, gun cuir thu CB Gàidhlig a-steach anns nach eil mearachdan gràmair no litreachaidh sam bith.’

Dh’fhaodadh gum biodh e feumail bruidhinn air sin sa chiad pharagraf far a bheil thu a’ bruidhinn mu do dheidhinn fhèin.

‘Cuideachd tha Gàidhlig na sgil, agus mar sin dèan sanasachd air dìreach mar a dhèanadh tu air sgilean eile mar choimpiutaireachd.’

Dè mu dheidhinn obraichean nach fheum sgilean Gàidhlig?

‘Nuair a tha thu a’ cur a-steach airson obair far nach eil Gàidhlig na pàirt mòr dhith, ach tha Plana Gàidhlig aig a’ bhuidhinn, b’ fhiach e iomradh a thoirt air na sgilean Gàidhlig agad sa CB, oir dh’fhaodadh gun tigeadh cothroman à sin aig àm eile,' tha Morna ag ràdh.

Tha Bruce MacIlleBhàin na mhanaidsear airson prògram slàinte phoblaich aig Ionad Ghlaschu airson Slàinte a’ Phobaill, agus bidh e a’ cleachdadh nan sgilean Gàidhlig aige ged nach iad riatanach na obair.

‘Ged nach eil mi air m’ fhastadh airson a bhith nam neach-labhairt Gàidhlig no dad mar sin, bidh mi a’ dèanamh agallamhan ann an Gàidhlig airson nam meadhanan - ’s dòcha gus bruidhinn air aon de na h-aithisgean againn, no airson beachd a thoirt seachad air rudeigin eile a tha tachairt,’ tha Bruce ag ràdh.

Comhairle Glè Fheumail

‘Chanainn gur e an rud as cudromaiche a bhith smaoineachadh air na prìomh sgilean agad nuair a tha thu a’ cur a-steach airson obair. Mas e dreuchd Ghàidhlig a th’ ann, dèan sanasachd air na sgilean Gàidhlig agad,’ tha Morna ag ràdh.
