Purpose

Animal me is a simple quiz to help users start thinking about their personality. The questions and results prompt them to think about who they are, what they’re like, and what options might suit them for the future.

Teachers can use Animal me as a learning tool to identify personalities and preferences as well as helping children find out more about themselves.

Overview

Animal me has been developed by Skills Development Scotland partner David Hodgson. A former careers adviser, David has done extensive work to explore personality type theories with young people.

Animal me uses four sets of questions around different factors of their personality. These let users explore whether they are more:

  • Extroverted or Introverted
  • Sensing or Intuitive
  • Feeling or Thinking
  • Judging or Percieving

The background

The questions are based on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. This in turn is based on Carl G Jung’s theory of psychological type.

In 1921, Jung published Psychological Types, which introduced the idea that each person has a ‘type’. This academic text was adapted by Isabel Briggs Myers and her mother Katharine Cook Briggs to help people understand the theory.

How it works

Depending on their results for each of these sets of questions, the user will be assigned an animal to symbolise their personality type. We’ve used animals because it’s easier for people to remember what their animal is, than a code or word about their personality.

As well as their animal, the user will be given a report with lots of details about their personality, plus the kinds of jobs which may suit this personality type.

For teachers, the Animal me lesson plans have readymade activities and support resources that will allow you to draw out these learning outcomes when using the quiz.

Why is it important to understand personality?

The more you understand about yourself, the more you understand about what you’ll enjoy doing and could be good at. Knowing their personality is a way for young people to start exploring what activities, subjects and jobs would be a good fit.

Where can I find out more?

David Hodgson’s book, Personality in the classroom, is a useful resource for teachers who want to learn more about the theory behind Animal me, and how it applies in class.
